DEEP Official Discusses Value of Regional Waste Authorities
The Temporary Sustainable Waste Management Committee invited Chris Nelson, supervising environmental analyst at the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, to its March meeting to discuss state trends in waste management. Nelson said his department is starting to see towns realize the value of approaching the waste disposal challenges from a regional perspective through the creation of regional waste authorities, including the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority in western Connecticut and the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Resource Recovery Authority. These regional authorities, he said, do a lot to negotiate tipping fees, run pilot programs, and more. “They’re showing that towns can come together and work on some innovative solutions to divert what might otherwise go into trash or standard recycling,” he said.
